A wedding away from home: legal recognition of the marriage, documents, guest travel logistics and coordinating a venue remotely. The list adapts to whether the ceremony is legal or symbolic.

[ ] Check that a marriage there is recognized back home
    Some countries need a separate recognition process or an apostille on the certificate once you're back — check with a consulate or lawyer beforehand, not after the wedding.
[ ] Check the destination's residency requirement before marrying
    Some countries only register a non-resident marriage after several days or weeks on-site — this directly shapes how long and costly the trip needs to be.
[ ] Gather and translate required documents in advance
    Birth certificate, single-status affidavit, apostille — translation and legalization can take weeks, start well ahead of the trip.
[ ] Plan a separate legal registration at home
    A symbolic ceremony abroad usually isn't legally binding — register at your local registry office before or after the trip.
[ ] Book a local wedding planner or venue coordinator
    Remote coordination across time zones needs a local point person handling things on the ground — vet reviews and do at least one video call before paying anything.
[ ] Send save-the-dates much earlier than usual
    Guests need time to arrange time off and flights — for a destination wedding that's 6–12 months, not the usual couple of months.
[ ] Negotiate a hotel room block at a couple of price points
    A single option prices some guests out — a block at two different tiers keeps the trip within reach for more people.
[ ] Check visa requirements for your guest list
    Not just for yourselves — guests of different nationalities can face very different entry rules; flag this in the invitation, not as a last-minute surprise.
[ ] Clearly communicate what you're covering versus what guests pay for
    Transport, part of accommodation, specific events — ambiguity here sours the mood more than the actual amount ever would.
[ ] Check the venue's weather pattern for your date
    A rainy or hurricane season can wreck an outdoor plan — check climate data, not just the brochure photos.
[ ] Confirm vendor payment terms and currency
    Deposits abroad are hard to dispute — pay by a card with purchase protection where possible, not a wire to a personal account.
[ ] Plan a low-key welcome event the evening guests arrive
    After a long flight, guests need an easy first evening to reconnect, not straight into a formal program.
[ ] Check customs rules for bringing wedding rings
    Duty-free allowances for valuables differ by country — check whether the rings need declaring and could trigger duty.
[ ] Book a hair and makeup trial days before the wedding
    Humidity and different water change results more than you'd expect — trial it on-site rather than trusting portfolio photos from back home.
[ ] Confirm what's included versus à la carte in the venue package
    Catering headcount minimums, corkage fees, overtime charges — common surprises in the final bill.
[ ] Plan a livestream option for guests who can't travel
    Or a second celebration at home later — not everyone can afford the trip, and feeling included matters to them just as much.
[ ] Confirm the photographer is licensed to shoot at your specific venue
    Some venues only allow their own approved vendor list — check this before booking an outside photographer.
[ ] Get trip-cancellation insurance for the whole wedding party
    Not just for the couple — illness or a mishap affecting a key guest or vendor is worth insuring against too.
[ ] Pack a wedding-day emergency kit
    A wrinkle-release alternative to a steamer (not always available at the hotel), a sewing kit, stain remover — luggage handling isn't gentle on formalwear.
[ ] Carry the dress and suit as hand luggage if humanly possible
    And have a backup plan for delayed luggage — checking your main wedding outfit into the hold is a real risk.
[ ] Confirm how you'll receive the marriage certificate after leaving
    In some countries the certificate is mailed weeks later — confirm the process in advance so it doesn't get lost after you've already left.
