Kitchen cleaning checklist Clean the kitchen in a working order: what to soak first, how to treat the hob, doors and worktop, and what to check at the end. The list adapts to your appliances. [ ] Clear the worktop and gather your supplies Take everything you do not use daily off the worktop. Set out gloves, a non-scratch sponge, separate cloths for greasy and clean areas, and a cleaner suited to your surfaces. [ ] Turn on the extractor or open a window Degreasers rely on active ingredients and their fumes irritate the airways. Ventilation is part of the product instructions, not an optional extra. [ ] Put grates, filters and removable parts in to soak Cover them with hot water and a degreaser in the sink or a basin at the very start. By the time you get back to them, the residue wipes off without scrubbing. [ ] Empty the sink: wash the dishes or load them An empty sink is what the rest of the clean depends on: you will wash parts, rinse cloths and fill the bucket there. [ ] Throw out empty packaging and expired food from the work area Check the open packets by the hob and on the shelf above the worktop. Write down anything running low while you can still see it. [ ] Wipe the cabinet tops and the outside of the extractor This is where the stickiest layer builds up: grease plus dust. Work from the top down and swap the cloth once it stops picking anything up. [ ] Wipe cabinet doors and handles Pay attention to the area next to the hob and around the handles. Painted and foil-wrapped doors dislike abrasives and standing moisture: wipe, then dry immediately. [ ] Clean the hob Use a dedicated cleaner on ceramic glass and lift burnt-on marks with a scraper at a low angle, not with an abrasive pad. Gas grates will have soaked by now. [ ] Clean the splashback and the wall behind the hob Apply the cleaner, let it sit for the time on the label and wipe the residue away. Check that it is safe for the grout, which does not tolerate everything. [ ] Clean the inside of the microwave Heat a container of water inside so the steam softens the residue, then wipe the walls. That way you never take an abrasive to the internal coating. [ ] Clean the oven the way its manual says The method depends on the oven: catalytic liners and pyrolytic cycles each have their own rules and prohibitions. Read the manual first, choose the product second. [ ] Wash the extractor's grease filter Take out the soaked filter, rinse it and let it dry before refitting. A clogged filter is the main reason an extractor stops pulling air. [ ] Clean the worktop according to its material Wood is wiped with a damp, never wet, cloth and dried at once. Stone and composite dislike acidic cleaners. Laminate suffers from water in its joints. [ ] Clean the sink, tap and drain Clear food debris from the drain, clean behind the tap and dry the fitting: water marks show most on stainless steel and chrome. [ ] Rinse the dishwasher filter Take the filter out, remove food debris and rinse it. Smells from the machine and film on the dishes usually start right here. [ ] Wipe the kettle, toaster and other worktop appliances Unplug them first. Wipe the housing with a barely damp cloth, keeping liquid away from buttons and sockets, and empty the toaster crumb tray. [ ] Wash the bin and replace the bag Clean the bin inside and out, especially the lid and the pedal. Kitchen smells come from the bin itself more often than from the rubbish in it. [ ] Replace the sponge and hang the cloths to dry A damp sponge is the dirtiest object in the kitchen. Replace it regularly and hang cloths so they dry fully between uses. [ ] Wipe handles, switches and the fridge door These are the spots greasy hands touch most. Around switches use a barely damp cloth and never spray liquid into the gaps. [ ] Mop from the far corner towards the door Sweep up crumbs first, then mop. Do not skip the area in front of the hob, under the table and around the bin, where grease and dust collect together. [ ] Check the result and write down what ran out Surfaces dry, sink empty, appliances back in place, bin washed. Write down repairs and shopping as separate tasks so that the cleaning itself can end.
