Seasonal wardrobe switch
How to change the wardrobe usefully: lay everything out and try it on, four piles, wash what is leaving, store it properly, treat shoes and list the gaps.

[ ] Take out all the season's clothes and sort by type
    Tops with tops, bottoms with bottoms. Only then do duplicates show: five similar t-shirts and no intact loungewear.
[ ] Try on anything doubtful
    Decisions from memory are always wrong. Fifteen minutes of trying on saves a season of morning disappointment.
[ ] Split everything into four piles
    Wear, repair, donate, discard. There is no fifth pile of \u201clet it sit\u201d — that is exactly what fills a wardrobe.
[ ] Give the repair pile a deadline
    A zip, a button, a hem, shoes. If it is not fixed within a month, the pile becomes \u201cdonate\u201d without debate.
[ ] Give away what is intact and clean, immediately
    A bag that stands in the hallway for a month ends up back in the wardrobe. Take it or arrange collection the same day.
[ ] Wash and clean everything going into storage
    Stains and smells set over a season, and soiled fibres attract moths. Follow the care labels.
[ ] Clean and dry the shoes before storing
    Remove salt and dirt, dry them naturally, add shoe trees or paper. Damp shoes are ruined in a single off-season.
[ ] Store the clothes properly
    Fold heavy knitwear rather than hanging it. Do not seal leather and wool in airtight plastic. Keep it dry and dark.
[ ] Check the wardrobe and protect woollens
    Vacuum shelves and corners, inspect woollens for damage. Use any treatments as their instructions say.
[ ] Label the boxes
    \u201cWinter, jumpers\u201d, \u201cSummer, t-shirts\u201d. In six months you will not remember, and will open them all.
[ ] Take out the new season's clothes and inspect them
    Check condition, fit and completeness before the cold or heat arrives, not on the day you need them.
[ ] Check children's sizes in advance
    Children grow over a season. Better to find the coat is too small in September than in the first frost.
[ ] Write down what is missing
    The list comes from what is laid out in front of you, not from a shop. That makes purchases precise rather than random.
[ ] Send anything that needs it for cleaning
    Coats, down jackets, suits. At the end of a season queues are shorter, and the item is stored clean all through.
