A car is sold by preparation and honesty, not by price
A used-car buyer fears one thing: that something was not disclosed. So the best investment before a sale is not polish but transparency: a clear service history, an honest list of faults and a willingness to have the car inspected anywhere.
The second factor is preparation. A clean, cared-for, serviced car sells faster and for more than the same car dirty — not because it shines, but because it looks like someone was paying attention.
Before you advertise
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Gather documents and service history | Removes the buyer’s main fear |
| Fix the small things | A blown bulb raises questions about big things |
| Interior clean and a wash | The biggest effect on first impressions |
| An honest list of faults | Saves both sides time and reduces haggling |
| Check your price against the market | Otherwise it sits for months or sells too cheap |
Repairing major components before a sale rarely pays: you seldom recover the money. Better to state it honestly in the advert and reflect it in the price.
The advert
Plenty of daylight photos from every angle, including the interior, boot, engine bay and any damage. Describe it with facts: year, mileage, specification, what was replaced and when, what needs attention. No emotion and no “needs nothing spent on it”: that phrase creates suspicion by itself.
Viewing and test drive
Meet during the day in a busy place. Before a test drive, check the licence and insurance — you are responsible for who sits behind the wheel of your car. Agree to an independent inspection: refusing looks suspicious, and an honest car passes.
The transaction and safety
No deposits to a card without meeting. Take payment in a way that is standard and safe in your country, with proof of receipt. Two copies of the contract, the odometer reading, the date and time of handover. Film the car and documents before handing them over.
After the sale
Make sure the registration and insurance are transferred according to your country’s rules — otherwise fines and tax keep arriving to you. Keep the contract and all documents: they can be needed a year later.
When it is all done properly
Documents gathered, small faults fixed, the car clean, the advert honest, the viewing held somewhere safe, the money received and confirmed, the contract signed and the transfer completed.
