Ready-made checklist

Day hike with kids

Not a multi-day trek — a walk scaled to a kid's legs: route, pace, snacks and a plan for 'I can't walk anymore'. The list adapts to whether the child walks or rides in a carrier.

Your checklist

Work through the list in order. Hide the notes when you know what to do.

  1. Pick a route sized for the kid

Rough rule of thumb: distance in km ≈ the child's age. A loop or out-and-back with an early bail-out point beats a one-way trail with no turning back.

  2. Decide the turn-back trigger in advance

A specific trigger — time, weather, a meltdown — decided at home, not mid-trail when everyone's tired and admitting it's time to turn back gets harder.

  3. Tell someone your route and expected return time

Even for a 'quick walk' — a note on the fridge or a text to a friend with a pin on the map.

  4. Pack more water and snacks than seems necessary

Small legs burn through energy fast. A snack every 30–45 minutes, not just at breaks, keeps mood and pace up.

  5. Wear broken-in closed-toe shoes Walking on their own

No brand-new shoes on hike day — a blister halfway in ends the hike faster than tired legs ever would.

  6. Check the carrier fit beforehand In a carrier

Adjust it on both parents' shoulders at home and practice the weight distribution — fitting straps mid-trail is slow and awkward.

  7. Bring sun cover for the carrier seat In a carrier

A carried child isn't moving and can't shift out of the sun themselves — direct rays hit longer than they would while walking.

  8. Pack layers, not one warm jacket

Kids overheat and chill faster than adults. Layers come on and off as needed; one heavy jacket doesn't adjust.

  9. Sun hat and sunscreen — and reapply mid-hike

Reapplication is the part everyone forgets after a couple of hours of active sun exposure.

  10. Pack a small first aid kit

Plasters (plenty — scraped knees and blisters happen), antiseptic wipes, tweezers for splinters, any allergy medicine the child needs.

  11. Give the child a whistle and the 'stay put' rule Walking on their own

Three whistle blasts means 'I'm lost'. Explain the 'hug a tree and wait' rule in the car, before the trail even starts.

  12. Photograph the child's outfit before you start

An exact photo of what they're wearing helps if you ever need to describe them for someone helping to search.

  13. Bug spray and a tick check afterward

After a trail through tall grass or woods — check skin and hairline, especially for kids.

  14. Bring a game or a spotting list for the trail

Spotting five red leaves or three kinds of birds distracts from tired legs far better than 'are we there yet'.

  15. Leave a full change of clothes in the car

Mud, a stream crossing, the occasional accident — you'll use this more often than you'd think.

  16. Pack a trash bag

Pack out everything you brought — a natural moment to teach the leave-no-trace rule along the way.

  17. Download an offline map of the route

Cell signal drops out in the woods and hills more often than you'd expect from the city.

  18. Pack extra diapers and wipes In a carrier

More than you'd bring for a usual hour-long outing — the trail almost always takes longer than planned.

  19. Have a snack and dry clothes ready in the car for the ride home

Set up before you leave home — a meltdown on the drive back is far easier to handle when everything's already within reach.
