First blood donation
The organizational side of a first donation: how to prepare, what to bring, and how to recover afterward. Eligibility is always decided by the donation center itself, not by this list.

Your checklist
Work through the list in order. Hide the notes when you know what to do.
-
Check the basic eligibility rules on the center's site
Age, weight, waiting periods after recent illness, vaccines or tattoos — the list differs by center and changes, but the final call is always the on-site doctor's.
-
Book an appointment if the center takes them
Saves hours of waiting, especially on popular days — check the booking format on the center's site.
-
Bring your ID
Without it you won't be admitted at all — it's the first thing checked at the door.
-
Get a good night's sleep beforehand
Poor sleep is a common contributor to feeling unwell during or after a donation, on top of other factors.
-
Eat before donating, but keep it light
Don't go on an empty stomach — check the center's guidance on food the day before; fatty meals are usually discouraged.
-
Drink plenty of water beforehand
Good hydration makes the procedure easier and lowers the risk of feeling dizzy afterward.
-
Skip alcohol 1–2 days before donating
Check the exact window with the center — this is a near-universal requirement.
-
Wear a sleeve you can easily roll up
A small thing that saves awkwardness and time during the procedure itself.
-
Bring water and a snack for afterward
Centers usually feed you after, but your own water bottle and something sweet help on the way home.
-
Skip heavy physical activity on donation day
The gym or heavy labor right after is a bad idea regardless of how fine you feel in the moment.
-
Tell the staff if you're nervous about needles or blood
A completely normal thing to say — staff deal with this constantly and know how to help you settle in.
-
Rest 10–15 minutes on-site right after
Don't rush to get up and leave — that's exactly why centers keep a rest area with tea and cookies.
-
Keep the bandage on for a few hours
And keep the puncture site dry for the first few hours — ask staff for the exact timing before you leave.
-
Don't strain the arm used for the draw for the rest of the day
Skip carrying heavy bags with that arm until the next day.
-
Ask about a certificate for work or school if you need one
In some countries donors are entitled to time off or other benefits — ask the center what paperwork is required.
-
Note the next eligible donation date on your calendar
There's a mandatory interval between donations — the center tells you the exact date, so set a reminder rather than relying on memory.
