Internal job transfer
Not quitting and not starting at a new employer — moving to a different role or team inside the same company: negotiating terms, handing off current work, and the first weeks in the new spot.

Your checklist
Work through the list in order. Hide the notes when you know what to do.
-
Clarify the new role's terms before agreeing
Salary, level, direct manager, probation expectations — get it in writing; an internal move shouldn't be settled by a hallway conversation.
-
Agree on the transition timeline with both sides
The current and future manager can have different pictures of your start date — nail it down explicitly, in a message to all three of you.
-
Tell your current manager in person and early
Before the news reaches them secondhand — even an internal move lands better when they hear it from you first.
-
Write a handoff document for current work
Project status, contacts, where things live, what's urgent — the same principle as leaving a job, just the recipient might be a teammate down the hall.
-
Find out who's taking over your current duties
If there's no successor yet, find out the interim plan so nothing falls through the cracks with no clear owner.
-
Check which access needs closing and which needs opening
Old systems and channels, new team tools — usually goes through IT or HR, confirm the process ahead of time.
-
Keep the old team relationships warm
You'll likely keep crossing paths inside the company — parting on good terms pays off faster than it seems.
-
Learn the new team's norms ahead of time
Meeting format, tools, unwritten rules — ask the new manager before day one rather than figuring it out on the fly.
-
Ask to be introduced to key people on the new team
A formal intro in the first week saves weeks of awkward 'and you are?' in chat threads.
-
Discuss a first-months plan with the new manager
What's expected by the end of the first month and the third — ask directly rather than guessing.
-
Update your title in internal systems
Email signature, internal directory, system access under the new role — a small thing that's easy to forget in week one.
-
Check how the move affects the current review cycle
Who writes your performance review for the period — the old or new manager — and whether the transition gets accounted for separately.
-
Announce the move to wider colleagues appropriately
A short note thanking the old team, with a way to stay in touch — keeps it professional and avoids rumors filling the gap.
-
Note for yourself why you decided to move
Useful to revisit a few months in and check whether the expectations actually held up.
