1. Declutter before packing

   Roughly a third of your stuff isn't worth hauling. Sell, donate or toss it now — every box costs money and effort.

2. Buy boxes, tape and wrap

   You need 1.5x more boxes than you think. Add bubble wrap, markers and a couple of spare tape rolls.

3. Book movers and a van in advance

   Good crews get booked 1–2 weeks ahead for weekends. Mention floors, elevator and bulky items — they affect the price.

4. Measure doorways and furniture at the new place

   The sofa that won't fit through the door is a classic. Measure doorways, stairs, the elevator and your biggest pieces beforehand.

5. Order internet at the new place a week ahead

   Hookups often take days, and technician slots even longer. Order ahead so you're not offline in your new home.

6. Arrange elevator and parking for moving day

   Freight elevator, vehicle access, a spot by the entrance — check with both buildings so the movers aren't waiting on the clock.

7. Pack room by room and label boxes

   Every box gets a room name and brief contents. Mystery box #27 will haunt you for months otherwise.

8. Fragile items — separate and marked

   Wrap dishes and glass in bubble wrap and towels, mark boxes FRAGILE on all sides and never stack them at the bottom.

9. Photograph cable setups before unplugging

   A photo of the TV and router backs saves an hour of frustration later. Bag the cables and label them.

10. Pack a first-night box

    Kettle, mugs, chargers, bed linens, toilet paper, basic tools, a light bulb. Loaded last, opened first.

11. Carry documents and valuables yourself

    Passports, contracts, jewelry, pricey electronics — in a separate bag that rides with you, not in the truck.

12. Eat down your food stock, skip big grocery runs

    Switch to eat-the-freezer mode a week or two out. Hauling soup pots and frozen stockpiles is nobody's idea of fun.

13. Defrost the fridge a day ahead

    Defrost, wash, dry. Otherwise it travels dripping on your boxes and arrives with a smell.

14. Install shipping bolts in the washing machine

    Without them the drum bounces around and the machine can arrive dead. They came with it; replacements cost pennies.

15. Confirm the movers the day before

    A quick call: time, addresses, floors, payment. A no-show crew on moving day is the worst-case scenario.

16. Record meter readings at both places

    Water, electricity, gas — with photos and the date. It's your protection against someone else's bills and disputes.

17. Update your address: banks, deliveries, subscriptions

    Banks, marketplaces, employer, clinics, subscriptions. Make a list — recalling them one by one takes half a year.

18. Transfer utility accounts

    Close or transfer accounts at the old address, set them up at the new one — power, water, gas, building services.

19. Dispose of unwanted furniture and bulky items

    The old wardrobe shouldn't move with you 'just in case'. Sell it, give it away or book a pickup — before the big day.

20. Plan the furniture layout in advance

    Sketch what goes in which room. Movers place things right away instead of building a mountain in the living room.

21. Clean the old place and hand it over

    Cleaning, minor fixes, a proper handover. If you rented, that's your deposit; if you sold, that's your reputation.

22. Collect every set of keys

    Yours, spares, the ones relatives hold, mailbox and storage keys. Return the old ones, count the new ones.

23. Arrange the school or daycare transfer Kids

    Check availability in the new area early: paperwork, waitlists, timelines. It takes longer than you'd expect.

24. The kid's favorite-things box rides with you Kids

    Favorite toy, blanket, book — in your car, not the truck. Familiar things on night one make the new place feel safe.

25. Kids spend moving day with grandma or a sitter Kids

    Open doors, movers, boxes and chaos are no place for a little one. Arrange in advance where they'll spend the day.

26. Prepare a pet carrier Pets

    Your pet rides in a carrier in your car, with water and a familiar blanket. Bring the carrier out early so they can get used to it.

27. Pet passport and records go in your personal bag Pets

    Vaccination records and vet contacts. While you're at it, find a vet clinic near the new home.

28. Update the ID tag with your new address Pets

    New address and phone on the tag before the move. If your pet is microchipped, update the registry too.

29. Keep the cat indoors the first weeks, windows shut Pets

    Moving stress is the top reason cats bolt. Close windows and balconies and give the cat 2–3 weeks to settle in.
